Birthday Celebration

Ted Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd on the 17th August 1930. 

Each year The Elmet Trust holds a celebration of the poet’s birthday. 

Birthday Celebrations 2024

 The Elmet Trust hosted three events over the weekend of 17th and 18th August 2024.

 Walking Through Elmet on Saturday 17th August saw poet and novelist Michael Stewart taking a group on a walk through part of Elmet, followed by a workshop in Heptonstall Museum.

Saturday evening saw the Hughes Birthday Reading at The Stubbing Wharf in Hebden Bridge, a place mentioned in Birthday Letters. Local poets Zaffar Kunial & Steve Ely read from their recent collections and answered questions from the audience in an illuminating and detailed Q&A session.

On Sunday evening, the Bookcase in Hebden Bridge hosted A Company of Poets with Sarah Corbett,  Michael Haslam, Ian Humphries, Carola Luther, David Mullin, Michael Stewart and Judith Willson reading their work and talking about their connections to Hughes, Plath and the Calder Valley landscape.
